Spherical Panorama: UVA Lawn

This year, a new service that we offer is interactive spherical panorama photography for the web. This is something that, simply put, we think is really cool. We live in a constantly changing culture where spaces and places are often different from year to year (sometimes even day to day). And we believe that preserving an image of a location is so important for the future…and even more so when that image can offer so many unique perspectives at one time.

We love the opportunity that this sort of photography offers for people in present day. Sometimes these photos allow those of us who are not able to travel a chance to more fully experience a place we have always wanted to visit. Other times, being able to have this broader experience is just the catalyst needed to encourage us to go see the place in person. Be it for archiving, sharing an experience with those who cannot have it or inspiring people to join in, Squid and Beard is very excited to put this fun technology to use.

We find these photographs are a great supplement to documentary shorts about individuals and organizations. Once you hear their story, you can then take a moment and live in their space. But even without a video to compliment, the panoramas certainly stand alone. Over the coming months, we will be sharing some of our favorites with you. You can check them out by clicking here.

With a few UVA alumni under our roof, we thought we would start by showing you the beautiful grounds of The University of Virginia. Here you can take a spin right in the middle of The Lawn and appreciate the amazing architecture of The Rotunda. We are excited to send more your way and we hope you enjoy. Be sure to try moving around and zooming with your mouse (or the control and shift buttons).

…another cool thing: this works great on your iPhones and iPads!
